Tree hollows are essential for wildlife. They provide refuge from the weather and predators, and safe sites for roosting and breeding. Only old trees have hollows. These form over some 100 years as a result of loss of limbs and natural forces such as wind, heat, fire, lightning, rain and attack from insects and fungi. Wildlife will also renovate and adapt the hollow using beaks, teeth and claws to make it suitable for their own needs.

Join Ian Moodie, well known environmentalist in this fascinating walk around Yarran Dheran to see a range of natural and artificial hollows in Yarran Dheran and to find out what factors affect how frequently and by what species a hollow is used.

Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and enclosed shoes. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
