Habitat around the ephemeral wetlands of Yarran Dheran supports seven frog species, which are most reliably identified by their calls. Only males call regularly, usually in the evening and during a defined breeding season.
The Yarran Dheran Quarterly Frog Survey is a citizen science activity hosted by the City of Whitehorse in conjunction with the Yarran Dheran Advisory Committee, and contributes to both Melbourne Water’s Frog Census and the Australian Museum’s FrogID program. Yarran Dheran has been submitting recordings to Melbourne Water’s Frog Census since 2009, adding valuable long‑term data about local frog populations.
Join us to learn how to collect and submit frog call recordings from your own local area. The session includes a brief presentation and guidance on using frog identification apps, followed by a guided walk to the Yarran Dheran ponds to record and submit frog calls and, with luck, spot a few frogs as well.
Please wear suitable clothing and enclosed shoes. Be prepared for mosquitoes. Not suitable for very young children or prams. No dogs please.
