🧪 Waterwatch

  • Yarran Dheran Visitor Centre 1A Ashburton Drive Mitcham, VIC, 3132 Australia (map)

Help monitor the health of Mullum Mullum Creek by joining our monthly Waterwatch session at Yarran Dheran.

As part of Melbourne Water’s Waterwatch citizen science program, volunteers collect water samples, assess aquatic life, and record data that contributes to long-term monitoring of our local waterways. This information helps identify current pressures on the creek and informs future rehabilitation and education projects. Learn more here.

Over the past 150 years, urban development, vegetation removal, grazing, hard surfaces and stormwater systems have significantly altered our catchments. These changes impact water quality and the survival of aquatic life, including native fish and the many macro- and micro-organisms that depend on a healthy creek.

At Yarran Dheran, we test water samples monthly from designated sites along Mullum Mullum Creek, measuring key water quality indicators including phosphorus, electrical conductivity, turbidity, pH, ammonium and dissolved oxygen. Results are reported to Melbourne Water and contribute to broader environmental data collection. Records for our monitoring sites at Quarry Road, Aquarius Court and Tandarook Crescent (Donvale) are available online.

It’s a hands-on way to:

  • Learn about water quality and local ecosystems

  • Support conservation and citizen science

  • Enjoy a relaxed morning by the creek with like-minded people

No experience required—training and equipment provided on the day.
